Proud as Punch

Recently we have been privileged to share some magic with our kids. The first event was a concert with Sparky playing in the Queensland Youth Orchestra at their usual concert venue which is at the magnificent Old Museum Building near the Ekka. Over the time she has been playing with the QYO - now 5 years - I have watched as the renovations have become more and more organized and obvious for that matter. Whoever is doing it is making a good job of it. Anyway, the programme included Eternal Father Strong to Save with the French Horn section led by our Sparky. We waited in great anticipation. Before the concert began, the manager of the Wind Symphony went through his usual spiel but then added evacuation information which I had never heard done before at the Twilight concerts. The first half of the programme was filled by the Brisbane Symphonic Band which played as part of their repertoire, two great Australian pieces, Kelly and High Country. We settled in after interval to listen to what for us was to be the highlight and it was worth the wait. The sound of the horns was magic and the piece continued with such majesty, when we suddenly saw the manager stick his head out a door beside the stage and start making urgent looking winding motions with his arm. Next thing, the alarm went and we had to evacuate. Sparky said she could hear electric wires fizzing behind them but they were so professional, no-one let on that there could be something wrong. As it happened, the weather had laid on drizzle and cold (for Brisbane, ie) so standing around outside was not pleasant. The upside of all this was that when we eventually were allowed back into the concert hall, the conductor, Peter Francis, announced that they would begin again at the French horn part so we got to hear it all again - MAGIC!!!

Just last week we watched Humungus play futsal with that nervous feeling in the pit of the stomach which comes when watching your own kids play sport. It was the National Schools Titles played over three days. Humungus' team was undefeated and then had to play the final. Many times we have witnessed the same situation only to see his team defeated in the final. This time however, the gods were smiling, and his team won the 16s age group with no injuries. Now, we have been told that his name has been put forward for the All Stars squad. Pretty good heh?

We count our blessings. Have included a very small video. Nothing spectacular but then taking videos of sport is not the easiest thing I've ever done.
