1003 Clitheroe and Waddington

Last night we returned our hire car and Steve's school friend, Pete, picked us up and we stayed overnight at his in Clitheroe. Lots of reminiscing but sadly I didn't have my MP3 recorder with me to record the Lancs dialect and the story of course.

We walked into Clitheroe and climbed up to the Norman castle built around 1066. When walking around the outside of the tower, we were in danger of being blown off. Lucky we don't have false teeth; they would have been at risk for sure; It was bitterly cold with frequent gusts and wintery showers. We had a coffee and found a good spot in time to see the welcome home parade for the Duke of Lancaster's regiment returning from Afghanistan. It was a touching ceremony with Union Jacks flying from every nook and cranny.

We then walked back to Pete and Chris' via Waddington, stopping at the Lower Buck for lunch - a hearty steak, mushroom and guiness pie which Steve and I shared. St Helen's church was worth a look. The font looked at least 1000 years old ??? The first minister/priest served in 1021. The name of the local brew is Sawley Tempted (Sawley Abbey is close by).
