1203 In Mallaig

We had to do a quick change of plans and walked Mallaig looking for accommodation as the hostel was booked out for Saturday and Sunday nights. We found a lovely B&B called Springbank Guest House (proprietor Sandra McLean). The tariff is 25 pound per person per night but the breakfast looks huge. The only disadvantage is we can't cook our evening meals.
We then walked the Circular Walk which took us up the hills behind the town and gave us a delightful view over to Armadale on Skye where we were supposed to have gone. We both seem to have a snot factory in our heads. Where does it all come from when the weather is cold. We bought some cheese and bread rolls and went back to the room to have lunch all the while with light snow floating down on us. It was very cold and Steve's wound on his nose ached badly. He had to wrap his face in his scarf which was better but still not wonderful. Now, as I'm typing this he is asleep and snoring loudly - it must have knocked the stuffing out of him a bit.
Must try a dish called Cullen Skink which is on the menu at the local chippy. Apparently it's haddock and potato soup.
This is an amazing place. Would love to go across to the other islands: Eigg, Muck, Rum and Canna as well as Skye, of course. It's obviously best to come for about a week but straddle a weekend.
We are going on the train tomorrow at about 10 to a place called Glenfidden where there is a huge viaduct made even more famous because of the Harry Potter movies. Then on the return we'll get out at Morar and go to a beautiful sandy beach where the movie Local Hero was filmed. Tess might remember the movie sound track by Mark Knoffler as it used to scare her and she would run and hide.
